Counterfeit Alert

Consumer Alert: Beware of Cash in Walmart Registers

Lots of people enjoy both the low prices and the convenience of shopping at Wal-Mart. Another popular Wal-Mart convenience is avoiding a trip to the ATM and getting dinged with cash withdrawal fees. It’s easy to ask for cash back when the cashier rings up your purchases. But, beware. You might get back a wallet full of fake bills.

HILLSBOROUGH, NC (WTVD) –When someone hands you money, how do you know if it’s real or counterfeit, especially when you get it from a business?

Billie Ann Andrews went to the Hillsborough Walmart to get diapers and wipes for her grandchild. At the checkout, she paid with her debit card and asked for $100 cash back.

“He gave it to me as a $100 bill, “Billie Ann said. “I almost had him change it because I needed the twenties, but he had closed the door so I thought, never mind.”

Billie Ann said she never thought anything about the $100 bill until she tried to use it. “I went to Efland supermarket that night to buy some things,” she said. “They ran the little pen on it, and it came up counterfeit.”

It’s easy to protect yourself from getting fake bills when you request cash back at Wal-Mart. Buy a counterfeit pen. Most Wal-Marts sell them.

If Wal-Mart sells these pens, why don’t they use them ?
