Candidate Donald Trump called Pope
Francis a "very political person" for the latter's plan to visit the
Mexican side of the international border dividing Mexico from the United
States. The Republican candidate said that the pontiff does not appear to
understand the immigration problem in the U.S.
“So I think that the pope is a very
political person. I think that he doesn’t understand the problems our country
has. I don’t think he understands the danger of the open border that we have
with Mexico," Trump told Fox News host Stuart Varney in a Feb. 11 telephone
interview. He added, "Mexico got him to do it because Mexico wants to keep
the border just the way it is because they’re making a fortune and we’re
losing.”
This was in response to Varney's
question: "Pope Francis is going to stand at the border with Mexico,
standing with the migrants. What do you make of that?"
Besides his remarks about the Pope,
Trump spoke on a variety of topics, including immigration.
On Feb. 3, Pope Francis said of his
upcoming visit to the southern neighbor of the United States and the areas
ravaged by drug-related violence:
“The Mexico of violence, the Mexico
of corruption, the Mexico of drugs trafficking, the Mexico of cartels, is not
the Mexico our Mother wants.”
The Pope is due to arrive in Mexico
on Feb. 12, where thousands of people from throughout Latin America are
expecting his arrival. In Havana, he will make a brief stopover at the
international airport to confer with the Patriarch of the Russia Orthodox
Church. They are expected to discuss the persecution of Christians, especially
in the Middle East.
On the last day of his six-day visit
to Mexico, the Pope will celebrate a Mass in Juarez, just yards away from the
U.S./Mexico border.

I’m sure
several European countries could scrape up a million Muslim refugees and send
them to resettle in the Vatican.
