The
murder of the Russian Ambassador to Turkey caught Putin’s attention and he will
likely take several avenues to exact revenge.
It won’t be long before the Syrian rebels are destroyed and Putin can
train his guns on ISIS.
The
likely plan to punish the murderer is to make his entire family disappear
without a trace with no fanfare. ISIS will certainly get the message. It is
cheaper and cleaner than sending in the military. It’s effective and it’s the
KGB way.
Russia has great influence in former USSR
satellite countries like Uzbekistan, another Muslim country with no news about
radical Islam activities. Russia did have a problem with Muslims in Chechnya,
but after the Russians cleaned it out, everything got quiet. I suspect the Russians have figured out that
Muslims only respect the use of force and were appropriately brutal in putting
down Muslim rebellions.
Those
Arab countries who provided arms to ISIS will become very quiet and will hope
nobody puts the spotlight on them. Russia wants to sell oil and natural gas to
Turkey.
If Turkey
and Russia become closer, Turkey may need to decide whether or not to remain in
NATO. If Russia and Turkey join to root out ISIS in Turkey, it could be a
simple matter of Russia teaching Turkey how to handle radical Islam using the
KGB way. Russia has quite a few Muslim countries as trading partners including
Turkey and Iran. Turkey will also want to keep their European trading partners,
so life will be complicated for Turkey for some time.
