Balkan Countries

The Balkans Countries include: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia​​. They are located in the Balkans Peninsula in Southeastern Europe. The land mass of the Balkans is about 250 thousand square miles.

The EU countries are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece,Hungary, Ireland, Italy,   Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland,Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK.  The only EU members in the Balkans are Bulgaria and Slovenia.

The Land Mass of our smallest state, Rhode Island is 1000 square miles.  Our largest state is Alaska with 570,000 square miles. The Land Mass of the US is over 3.5 million square miles. The Balkans Countries are roughly the size of our States in the US.

Albania borders Greece and Macedonia. 11,100 square miles, population 2.9 million, 60% Muslim, GDP $13.4 billion, Per Capita GDP $4,147. Exports $2 billion, Imports $4.6 billion. Government Debt to GDP
Industries include agriculture, tobacco, food, mining, textiles, metals, oil, cement, hydro power.

Bosnia, borders Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. 19,741 square miles, population 3.5 million, 50% Muslim, 50% Christian, GDP $16.8 billion, Per Capita GDP $11,179. Exports $5.3 billion Imports $9.1 billion. Government Debt to GDP 29.9%.
Exports include metals, clothing, wood products.
Industries include steel, coal, iron ore, lead, zinc, manganese, bauxite, vehicles, textile, tobacco, furniture, tanks, aircraft, appliances, oil refining.

Bulgaria borders Romania, Serbia and Macedonia. 42,855 square miles, population 19.6 million, Orthodox Christian, GDP $54.3 billion, Per Capita GDP $7,743. Exports $26 billion, Imports $28 billion. Government Debt to GDP 24%
Exports include iron, steel, machinery, clothing, footwear. 
Industries include electrical power, refineries, mining and chemicals.

Croatia borders Slovenia, Hungary and Bosnia. 21,851 square miles, population 4.1 million, Catholic, GDP $51.5 billion, Per Capita GDP $12,292, Exports $12.4 billion, Imports $19.9 billion. Government Debt to GDP 81.9%.
Exports include transport equipment, machinery, textiles, chemicals, foodstuffs, fuels.
Industries include chemicals, plastics, machine tools, fabricated metal, electronics, pig iron, rolled steel, aluminum, paper, wood products, construction materials, textiles, shipbuilding, petroleum, refining, food, beverages, tourism.

Kosovo borders Albania, Montenegro, Serbia and Bulgaria. 4,212 square miles, population 1.9 million, Muslim, GDP $6.8 billion Per Capita GDP $3,661. Exports $350 million, Imports $2.7 billion. Government Debt to GDP 10.6%.
Industries include mining, scrap metal, processed metal, food, tobacco, leather and textiles

Macedonia borders Albania, Serbia and Bulgaria, 9,928 square miles, population 2 million, 65% Orthodox Christian, 32% Muslim. GDP $13 billion, Per Capita GDP $6000 per year, Exports $4.8 billion, Imports $6.8 billion. Government Debt to GDP 48%.
Industries include food processing, beverages, textiles, chemicals, iron, steel, cement, energy, pharmaceuticals

Slovenia borders Italy and Austria, Land Mass 7,827 square miles, population 2 million, Christian, GDP $52 billion, Per Capita GDP $25,329, Exports $28 billion, Imports $26 billion Government Debt to GDP 78%.
Exports include manufactured goods, machinery and transport equipment, chemicals, food.
Industries include: ferrous metallurgy and aluminum products, lead and zinc smelting; electronics (including military electronics), trucks, automobiles, electric power equipment, wood products, textiles, chemicals, machine tools. 

Serbia borders Bosnia and Romania. 29,913 square miles, population 7 million, Orthodox Christian, GDP $42.4 billion, Per Capita GDP $6,052. Exports $15 billion, Imports $19 billion. Government Debt to GDP 62.7%.
Exports include motor vehicles, electrical machines, fruits and vegetables.
Industries include motor vehicles, base metals, food processing, machinery, chemicals, sugar, tires and pharmaceuticals

Romania borders Hungary, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Serbia and Moldovia.  92,000 square miles, GDP $197 billion, Per Capita GDP $9,000. Exports $56 billion, Imports $66 billion, Government Debt to GDP 39%.
Industries include machinery, auto assembly, mining, timber, chemicals, food, textiles and refining.

Many of the Baltic Countries were former satellite states of the Soviet Union and were released in 1990.  Since then they have been building their private sector economies, but many are stifled by government regulations and corruption.

Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia and Moldovia are insulated from Russia by Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus and Ukraine that border Russia.
