Jennifer
Rickert, who teaches sixth grade English in upstate New York recently
appeared before her school board
and requested to be reassigned away from the Common Core ELA Assessment tests.
She explained to the board that she believes the Common Core curriculum is
beyond a sixth-grader’s language capabilities. In fact, she referred to the
testing as “cruel and harmful,” and she said she does not “believe in knowingly
setting my students up for failure.”
Pools
show 49 percent of New York voters would like to eliminate Common Core. A Long
Island teacher, Beth Dimino, has also opted out of Common Core. She hopes other
teachers will follow her and Rickert, and “cause this entire nonsensical system
to implode.”
Dimino
has taught science for 16 years. She garnered media attention two years ago
when she described the Common Core curriculum as “child abuse.”
Many
students have also opted out of Common Core, which has created problems for
school districts in securing federal grant money.
