Brass say Women Should Register for Draft By: CR Wire, 2/2/16
At a hearing before the Senate Armed
Services Committee on Tuesday, Army officials said they would personally
support a measure requiring women to register for the draft.
According to NBC News, Gen. Mark A. Milley, chief of staff of the Army, and Gen.
Robert B. Neller, the Marine Corps commandant said they would support the
move:
"Senator,
it's my personal view that, based on this lifting of restrictions ... every
American who's physically qualified should register for the draft," Neller
said in response to a question from Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Missouri, who
favors the change.
Milley
also agreed. "Senator, I think that all eligible and qualified men and
women should register for the draft," he said.
The conversation comes after Defense Secretary Ash Carter’s orders in December that the armed services would allow women to
participate in all combat positions, including special operations such as Army
Delta units and the Navy Seals.
The CR Wire covered the story last month and predicted that the logical next step would
be to require women to register for the draft. Now that change appears to be in
motion.
