Labor unions are
reacting to the Supreme Court decision that union member dues required the
member’s consent before dues could be used in political contributions. They are
also complaining about current “Right to Work” laws on the ballot in States.
The unions claim that
their pay rates are 3.5% higher than non-union rates. And that isn’t much. It is offset by benefits in some cases.
When Wisconsin voted
to become a “Right to Work” State, 40% of union members in Wisconsin who had
been required to be union members quit the union when they had a choice.
Unions have always
believed that Right to Work laws create an unfair advantage and call those who
do not join their union “free riders”.
The 25 states have passed Right
to Work laws are: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, Florida,
Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska,
Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota,
Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
