California Fire Update

On average, more than 100,000 wildfires, also called wildland fires or forest fires, clear 4 million to 5 million acres of land in the U.S. every year. In recent years, wildfires have burned up to 9 million acres of land. - Jan 18, 2018.

California’s total land mass is 99,892,700 acres.
42,288,380 acres owned by state and federal government
40,044,780 acres owned by the federal government
2,243,600 acres owned by the state government
47,604,320 acres owned by individuals.

The fires we are having in California and other Western States in 2018 should deliver damage to over 15 million acres or 9% of the land area.  There are 640 acres in 1 square mile, so this fire damage should exceed 12,438 square miles.  That’s larger than the 9 smallest states in the US and larger than half of the next 9 smallest states.

United States occupies 3,796,742.23 square miles
