In 2017, the US
produced 45 million metric tons of steel from US Steel and Nucor. The US also imported 35 million metric tons
of steel from other countries. See US
Tariff on Steel and Aluminum – June 18, 2018 on this blog.
From the steel consumption
numbers in 2017, it looks like the US uses 80 million metric tons per year.
Steel production in
the US in the first half of 2018 is listed in metric tons and includes
January 6.822
February 6.486
March 7.261
April 6.930
May 7.107
June 6.847
Total 41.453 metric tons
The US should be able
to increase domestic steel production to keep pace with US demand. The steel
tariff on imported steel is 25%.
