The US has been
increasing production of oil and natural gas since 2017 to match production
with US consumption. We have increased oil production to satisfy over half of
our consumption needs. We increased our
natural gas production to satisfy all US consumption needs in 2016 and began to
export natural gas. Exporting LNG requires that we convert natural gas to
liquid in order to ship it. This requires cooling the gas to minus 260” F.
When natural gas is cooled to a temperature of
approximately -260°F [-160°C] at atmospheric pressure it
condenses to a liquid called liquefied natural gas (LNG). One volume of this
liquid takes up about 1/600th the volume of natural gas at a stove burner tip.
LNG Exports by Country in million metric tons in 2016

Egypt, 0.5, 0.2%
Global demand for LNG
was 289.8 million metric tons in 2017.
The US exported 2.9
million metric tons of LNG in 2016.
1
metric ton of LNG equals 48,700 cubic feet of natural gas.
1 million metric tons LNG = 48.7 billion cubic feet NG
1 million metric tons oil equivalent = 39.2
billion cubic feet NG
