Six
Governors Issue Executive Orders to Arm National Guard and Military Personnel
In
the wake of the attack at the Chattanooga, TN recruiting office, the Governors
in Indiana, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma have passed
executive orders allowing their troops to be armed. With the deaths of five of
America’s finest on 16 July, the public outcry has been strongly in support of
allowing troops to carry.
“As
commander-in-chief of the Indiana National Guard, I will not permit our
citizen-soldiers to remain unable to defend themselves and our citizens at
facilities in our state,” Indiana Gov. Mike Pence said.
Additional
security measures are also under consideration.
As
part of Gov. Pence’s plan to increase security, an executive order issued
Saturday gave authority for National Guard personnel at all recruiting offices
and state military facilities to be armed. The governor also ordered the state
adjutant general to reevaluate security at these facilities.
In
other states, civilians, many of whom are former military, are standing watch to
assist recruiters.
There have also been increased patrols by local law enforcement.
