Brookhaven, GA, August 11, 2015 – by Trey Benton – Democrat Taylor Bennett has defeated Republican J Max Davis in the hotly contested House District 80 Special Election Runoff.
Bennett, who was the top vote getter in the four candidate July 14th Special Election, carried that momentum into the two person runoff. Taylor’s momentum, fueled by what he called “an incredible team effort” carried him through to once again receive the most votes and win the House District 80 State Representative Seat.
Bennett said, “I’m deeply humbled and inspired by the support we received from the citizens of Brookhaven, Chamblee, and Sandy Springs tonight. We set out to run a campaign that connected with every voter and hear every issue. And in spite of our success tonight, I know that we fell short of that goal. I had a coach tell me once that when you’re successful, you can celebrate tonight, but the work begins anew tomorrow. I look forward to continuing that work tomorrow morning and as the State Representative to every single resident of House District 80.”
Contrary to a full effort by top Republican officials, including Governor Nathan Deal, Davis was not able to pull enough votes to win the election.
Davis told The Post, “Thanks to all of my supporters in District 80 and their encouragement. I look forward to decompressing and getting back to rebuilding my law practice which has taken quite a hit over the past three years. I’m proud of the work that I did in building the City of Brookhaven to the benefit of all citizens — even those whose votes I didn’t earn.”
The Post asked Davis if he had any plans to run for Mayor in the upcoming Brookhaven election this November, he indicated his focus at this time was his family, rebuilding his reputation and “setting the record straight on some issues.”
Bennett pulled 54.53% of the vote while Davis pulled 45.47%.
Bennett got 2714 votes and Davis got 2263
votes. Total votes were 4977.
