Cities
and Counties responsible for delivering clean water supplies, sewer systems and
water treatment should see this infrastructure as their first priority. Testing, maintenance and replacement are
critical. The second priority is road and bridge maintenance and
replacement.
The sewer
spill in Atlanta and the iron water pipe problem in Flint Michigan should be a
wake-up call to all municipalities to look at their budgets. If they are behind in maintaining critical
infrastructure, they need to transfer funds from less critical areas to ensure
that they are ahead maintaining these very expensive systems.
Cities
and counties need to search out materials that will last longer. Pipes are normally buried and require
expensive and disruptive digging. Large Poly
replacement pipes that last 100 years are available to replace Storm Sewers. These replace corrugated steel pipes that
only last about 25 years.
The
lowest priorities for government would include anything that can and should be
provided by the Private Sector and by families.
That includes almost everything else governments have been bribed to do.
Voters
should know that having government do anything is by far the most expensive
option available.
