Defense is required to control the borders of sovereign
countries. The military has always been
used to defend borders except in the US due to the passage of bad law in 1878.
The US had most of its military bases located near the border before 1878 and
the borders were protected. These borders included coastlines on the Atlantic,
Pacific and the Gulf. This included military bases for the Army, Marines, Navy,
Airforce and the US Coastguard. From 1789 to 1898. defense was aimed at
preventing invasion. All of our wars
ended in 1890 with the last of the American Indian wars.
The US federal
government has failed to prevent invasion by migration by refusing to protect
borders or control visas. Congress has watered down US immigration policy and
it needs to be re-set to require merit and self-support for entry.
After 1898, the US
federal government began to change US defense policy to include Military
Foreign Aid. This began with the Spanish American War in 1898 when we invaded
Cuba and the Philippines to remove them from Spanish control. The Monroe doctrine issued in 1823 had two
parts that might have sounded like good ideas in 1823. In the first part, we
announced that we would not become involved in wars waged between European
countries and we wanted European countries to leave their colonies in the
American continent.
The Monroe Doctrine
resonated emotionally with most self-reliant US citizens, but it resulted in
too many unintended consequences. The fact that the US was protected by vast
oceans would allow the US to become the armaments provider for foreign wars.
This in itself prompted us to take sides. This is what happened in World War I
and World War II. After that, the US became the policeman for the world and
military foreign aid would be the primary reason for US “defense” expenditures.
We are now suffering from the migrant invasion brought to us by the UN and our
own sloppy immigration policies.
