The first “greet the
candidate” meeting I ever attended was in Salina Kansas. We had 3 State Rep
candidates show up to meet the voters. My buddie and I were the only
manufacturing company carpetbaggers at the meeting. The other 150 people
attending the meeting were government employees. The candidates assured the
attendees that they would certainly vote in increase funding for their
government departments and agencies. Reagan had just been elected and they were
crazy fearing they would lose their jobs.
The panicked neediness
in the group reminded me of the scene in the movie “Damien and the Lepers”,
when Father Damien had arrived back on Molokai with supplies and was mobbed by
his lepers as he stepped off the boat. I began to understand what the “deep state”
looks like and whose side our elected officials are really on. It’s government
of the government, by the government and for the government.
