Democrats
have passed the first step in blocking President Trump’s national emergency by
voting against it in the House of Representatives.
While the
House is controlled by the Democrats, they still managed to get help from no
less than thirteen Republicans.
The bad baker’s
dozen consists of Representatives Justin Amash, Brian Fitzpatrick, Mike
Gallagher, Jaime Herrera Beutler, Will Hurd, Greg Walden, Dusty Johnson, Cathy
McMorris Rodgers, Francis Rooney, Jim Sensenbrener, Elise Stefanik, Thomas
Massie and Fred Upton.
While
unfortunate both in that the motion passed and that some Republicans endorsed
it, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise pointed out the silver lining.
“When you see the vote today there will be nowhere near the
votes to override a veto,” Scalise shared with NPR. “Ultimately we are gonna
stand with the president in making sure we can secure this border and confront
this national crisis that’s taking lives every single day.”
