US annual federal government spending in 2000 was under $2 Trillion and
in 2008 was $3 Trillion, but is now over $4 Trillion in 2017. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_United_States_federal_budget

You have to ask how this happened. When the Soviet Union dissolved in
1989, we knew that we might be able to spend less on the US Military, but in
1990 we won the Gulf War and showcased our stealth air power. Our actual cost
has been blurred.
The US Department of Defense has estimated the
incremental costs of the Gulf War at $61 billion, with US allies providing
about $54 billion -- Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states covered $36
billion. Germany and Japan covered $16 billion.

The Afghan and Iraq Wars after 2001 added $4 Trillion to the cost.
Obama squandered $4 Trillion on Climate Change, grants for non-essentials,
mal-investments and UN Agenda 21 implementation. We also saw higher costs for
Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacare, healthcare and education due to
excessive federal subsidies. Healthcare and education costs are unsustainable,
because government pays the tab.
