Government Cost Drivers

In 1910, there were 540,000 employees working in government jobs. In 2015 there were 11,747,800 employees working in government jobs

In 1910, there was no Federal Reserve to create inflation, there was no Income Tax on individuals, corporations, death estates.  Federal Departments were limited to Secretaries of State, War, Treasury, Interior and Commerce. Federal Agencies were limited to the Bureau of Mines, Immigration Service and the US Postal Service.

In 1910, the US Federal Budget was $35 billion. Now in 2018, the US Federal Budget is $4 trillion.

In 1910, the House Reps and Senators wrote their own Bills and Regulations and shared 100 Congressional staff employees. Committees were Ways & Means and Finance.

In 1910, House Reps and Senators received campaign contributions from local power brokers and didn’t have to spend time fund raising.

In 1912, US Senators began to be elected by popular vote. Prior to the passage of the 17th Amendment, Senators were elected by State Legislatures.

The US Federal Government grew beyond its legal authority every time it created another department, agency or program that is not authorized in the “enumerated powers” written in the US Constitution.

The big cost drivers for government have been related to assuming unconstitutional powers and building massive bureaucracies to administer them.
