The US Unemployment
Rate was 3.9% in 1947 and 3.8% in 1948.
It rose to 5.9% in 1949 and 5.3% in 1950. It dropped to 3.3% in 1951, 3.0% in 1952 and
2.9% in 1953. It rose in 1954 to 5.5%.
It dropped to 4.4% in 1955 and was 4.1% in 1956 and 4.3% in 1957
In 1958 it rose to
6.8%, then dropped to 5.5% in 1959 and 5.5% in 1960. In 1961 it rose to 6.7%, then dropped to 5.5%
in 1962, 5.7% in 1963 and 5.2% in 1964.
In 1965 it dropped to
3.8% in 1966, 3.8% in 1967, 3.6% in 1968 and 3.5% in 1969
In 1970 it rose to
4.9%, the 5.9% in 1971 and 5.6% in 1972. In 1973 it dropped to 4.9% then rose
to 5.6% in 1974.
In 1975, the
unemployment rate rose to 8.5%, then eased to 7.7% in 1976. 7.1% in 1977, 6.1% in 1978 and 5.8% in 1979.
In 1980, it rose to
7.1% and in 1981 to 7.6%. In 1982 it jumped to 9.7% and then 9.6% in 1983.
In 1984 it dropped
back to 7.5% then 7.2% in 1985, 7.0% om 1986. 6.2% in 1987, 5.5% in 1988, 5.3%
in 1989 and 5.6% in 1990
In 1991 rates rose to
6.8%, then 7.5% in 1992. It eased back to 6.9% in 1993, then 6.1% in 1994, 5.6%
in 1995 and 5.4%.in 1996.
In 1997 the rate
dropped to 4.9%, then 4.5% in 1998, 4.2% in 1999, 4.0% in 2000 and 4.7% in
2001.
In 2002 the rate rose
to 5.8%, then 6.0% in 2003, 5.5% in 2004. 5.1% in 2005, 4.6% in 2006 and 4.6%
in 2007, then rose to 5.8 in 2008.
In 2009 the
unemployment rate shot up to 9.3%, then 9.6% in 2010, 9.8% in 2011, 8.1% in
2012, 7.4% in 2013, 6.2% in 2014, 5.3% in 2015, 4.9% in 2016, 4.4% in 2017 and
4.1% in 2018.
