US Barn Raising Culture 10-8-24

US citizens help their neighbors. This began from necessity during Colonial Times. The Colonial Economy was built on Agriculture. Neighbors worked together building roads. They also helped their neighbors building barns and rebuilding homes. This hasn’t changed. US citizens continue to help their neighbors when they need help. Churches continue to form volunteer groups to travel to weather affected areas. These groups show up to help affected families and do clean-up following Tornados and Hurricanes in their own States and in neighboring States. They show up with their chain saws, ready to clear fallen trees. They show up with tools to remove water-soaked drywall and carpets. One of my daughters lives in St. Petersburg Florida. She and her husband and their 3 sons belong to one of these Church groups. They have responded to neighbors in Florida and Louisiana with every Hurricane.

Botched Hurricane Helen Response: FEMA failed to respond properly to the damage Hurricane Helen did to Western North Carolina. The rural areas there are in the mountains. Roads and bridges were washed out. A proper response would have been to immediately dispatch 500 military helicopters to drop in to rural home sites to rescue families. This didn’t happen.

In our subdivision, we have neighbors watching out for neighbors and offering help as needed. We have always responded to neighbors who are ill and need attention.

We have several “empty-nester” retirees in their 80s. We have had several neighbors pass away. We have served as pall bearers for some and have attended funerals for those who have died.

This is an extension of families to care for their elderly. We are not related, but continue to watch out for our neighbors.
