US Hurricane History 10-13-24

Category 5 Hurricanes began to appear in the US in the 1930s. The frequency of US landfall Hurricanes has diminished since the 1940s. Increased Ocean Water Temperatures is tracked to determine hurricane intensity. The populations in Hurricane-Prone States have increased. Wind Damage and Flooding from Landfall Surge and Rain are causing damage to homes and businesses.

Hurricane Helene landed as a Cat 3. Helene took a Northern Path and collided with a large West to East Thunderstorm that ravaged mountainous rural areas in Western North Carolina. Roads were washed out requiring rescue by helicopter. Hurricane Milton quickly followed Helene with a move through Florida before debris from Helene was removed. Milton landed at Siesta Key, South of Sarasota FL as a Cat 3 on 10-10-24 and moved through Florida. Milton had developed as a Cat 5 Hurricane, moved to a Cat 4 and landed as a Cat 3.

The water temperature in the Gulf is at least 77°F and at most 87°F. The seasonal average water temperature is between 77°F and 85°F.  The top 700 meters (2,300 feet) of the global ocean has warmed about 1.5°F since 1901.
