Google Tops Corporate Spenders Lobbying Congress

April 23, 2015 By Staff Writer, tpnn.com

From January 1st through March 31st of 2015, Google has already spent $5.4 million on lobbying federal issues or positions, according to analysis of disclosure filings conducted by Maplight.

In only three months, that is more than twice the amount Google spent in the entire year of 2008.

Despite those eye-popping numbers and being the #1 ranked corporate contributor, Google ranked fifth as an organization in lobbying Congress and federal agencies. The top ten dollar contributors for the quarter are:

  1. Chamber of Commerce of the USA – $13,800,000
  2. National Association of Realtors – $7,700,000
  3. American Medical Association – $6,720,000
  4. US Chamber Institute for Legal Reform – $5,720,000
  5. Google – $5,470,000
  6. Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America – $5,440,000
  7. General Electric Company – $4,750,000
  8. National Association of Broadcasters – $4,720,000
  9. American Electric Power Company, Inc & affiliated corporations – $4,685,670
  10. American Hospital Association – $4,630,000
Google, like the others on the list, spreads its money around in a bi-partisan fashion to help ensure it achieves its ends. It has given money to lobbying organizations like the S-3 Group headed by former Republicans and to the Gephardt Group Government Affairs headed by former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt, a Democrat from Missouri.
According to Maplight, a nonpartisan organization that examines the role of money in politics, Google has directed most of its money toward trademarks and patents, labor and anti-trust issues.
The study offers rather convincing support to the suspicion that Congress may be bought.
