Georgia Population & Politics

Georgia has 4 counties with very large populations including Cobb 698,158, DeKalb 739,956, Fulton 1.014,932 and Gwinnett 789,499, with a combined population of 3,242,545 according to:  http://www.redstate.com/diary/martin_a_knight/2009/12/20/committeeman-project-al-ga/#ca

I consider these 4 counties to be Metro Atlanta. The Atlanta core counties that support MARTA operations are DeKalb and Fulton.  Cobb and Gwinnett have not been interested in MARTA trains enough to sign up for the extra 2 cent sales tax hike.  The next grouping of counties like Cherokee 210,529, Clayton 273,718 signed up for MARTA buses, Forsyth 168,060, are exurbs that are still partially agricultural.  The other counties claimed to be in the Atlanta Regional Commission are clearly agricultural.

Agricultural, rural Georgia includes 30 counties with populations under 10,000. Another 37 counties have populations between 10,000 and 20,000.  Yet another 28 counties have populations between 20,000 and 30,000. Another 10 counties have between 40,000 and 50,000. That’s 105 counties with populations under 60,000.

There are 15 other counties with populations over 100,000. That leaves 35 counties with populations between 60,000 and 100,000.

Georgia’s total population is around 10 million and should continue to grow. Our growth, however, is a mixed bag of good and bad news.

The good news is that: We have good weather and ample rainfall and many states don’t have either. Corporate headquarters are moving out of high tax states and appear to like Atlanta.  If we ever get our national economy back and can attract manufacturing again, Atlanta has proven it can handle providing the workforce.  Many of us moved here for the electronics boom of the 1980s. The best news is that the Georgia economy can stand on its own.

The bad news is that: We haven’t built any additional reservoirs to allow for more growth, but we need them to deal with our next drought period.  We still haven’t added to our highway and road systems to allow any growth. We lost most of our manufacturing and design to off-shoring and retrenchment back to headquarters locations and end-of-design cycles. Texas got all the growth and California retained its dominance.

The disturbing news is that: UN Agenda 21 identifies Atlanta as a “mega-city”. Also, Georgia receives $21 billion in federal dollars to match its $21 billion in state revenue each year and the federal government is broke. So how long could that last ?  We have a lot of government jobs in Atlanta and we should brace ourselves for a downturn.

Our best bet is to push productivity for everything we do.  In Georgia it’s primarily agriculture.  But we should make sure our energy costs are low and the regulations we allow are limited. We need to be a net-exporter of goods.
