Removing Statues

In the wake of the Confederate flag take-down, Communist voices are demanding the removal of Confederate statues from public land.

I would offer a more contemporary suggestion.  I would remove all “past things” to a “past place” like a museum or a political party or a place where it is more relevant. Unless, of course it belongs to an individual taxpayer and it’s on his or her or its property.

I like the removal of all things from government property. It helps us recognize how irrelevant government really is.

Remove the Statue of Liberty

When France gave us the Statue of Liberty, we were the most-free nation on the planet. This is no longer the case.  The US ranked 12th with a score of 76.2. the lowest was North Korea 178th with a score of 1.3.

The most-free countries on the 2015 list are currently Hong Kong (89.6), Singapore (89.4, New Zealand (82.1), Australia (81.4) and Switzerland (80.5). http://www.heritage.org/index/ranking

Heritage.org gives all countries a score based on:

Rule of Law – Property Rights and Freedom from Corruption

Limited Government – Government Spending and Fiscal Freedom

Regulatory Efficiency – Business Freedom, Labor Freedom and Monetary Freedom

Open Markets – Trade Freedom, Investment Freedom and financial Freedom

False Advertising

The US does have false advertising laws and I would say that the Statue of Liberty should either be removed and stored in a government warehouse along with the Arc of the Covenant…or sent to Hong Kong and then to whoever occupies First Place in 2016.

I’m confident we have a case here. I’m sure our courts would find the Statue of Liberty to be in violation of our false advertising laws.  And, government likes nothing more than to do useless things that cost a fortune.

An Alternative

If you don’t like removing the Statue of Liberty or turning it into a traveling trophy and you want the US to regain 1st place again, how about hanging a sign on the Statue of Liberty that says “Closed for Repairs”.

Or change the motto: “Send me your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"…to something more sustainable.
