Texas Governor Tells Obama
Exactly What He’s NOT in Bold Response to Bathroom Bill Controversy by Virginia
Kruta, 5/13/16
In the battle of the gender-neutral
bathrooms, several Texas officials have made it clear that they don’t intend to
go down without a fight. Governor Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan
Patrick have both issued bold challenges to the Obama Administration.
After North Carolina passed a law
limiting public restroom use to the gender a person was born, the Obama Administration sent letters to all 50 states, suggesting that federal funding for
schools could be tied to their policies regarding gender identity and
bathroom/locker room access. Texas Governor Greg Abbott told delegates at the state GOP convention in Dallas
on Thursday:
“I am
working with the governor of North Carolina, and we are going to fight back.” And on Twitter, he reiterated that there
are limitations to Obama’s power:
His Lieutenant Governor, Dan
Patrick, seems to be adopting the same attitude, saying that — if necessary —
the state of Texas would refuse any funds tied
to such policies: “I think the people
of Texas would join with the legislature to try to find a way around it…to try
to find money somewhere.
I don’t
want their money. This is dirty money from the federal government. It’s really
our tax money they’re sending back. We send it up clean to Washington, and he
sends it back dirty. He says ‘I’m not going to give you your money, unless you
do what I tell you to do.’”
Governor Abbott also hinted that
Texas might be on its way to adopting legislation similar to that which was passed in North Carolina.
