Corporate Support for
GLAAD Media Awards Funding LGBT Political Agenda in 2016
This weekend over forty
major corporations and organizations will help present the 27th GLAAD (Gay
& Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards. The annual event is
held with the purpose of recognizing efforts to promote LGBT issues in media
and entertainment. According to the event website, all proceeds from the GLAAD
Media Awards are used to support the organization’s “culture-changing” work.
2nd Vote’s research team
has taken a deep look into GLAAD’s history and found that much of the
organization’s work focuses on training media outlets on the terminology and
strategies used to cover their issue advocacy, especially on the issues of
marriage and religious liberty.
In recent years and
months, GLAAD has:
Openly advocated for the
Supreme Court overturn of the Federal Defense of Marriage Act and state laws
protecting traditional marriage.
Organized online
activists to prevent the implementation of legislation protecting the 1st
Amendment rights of pastors and churches in Georgia.
Collaborated with
Equality NC, the Human Rights Campaign, and the NAACP to organize protests
against North Carolina’s HB-2 and helping spread misinformation on the law,
including labeling the legislation a “Hate Bill”.
While the corporate
sponsors of the Media Awards help fund GLAAD’s grassroots efforts to push an
agenda that erodes religious liberties and traditional values, they also
support GLAAD’s development of strategies to shape the terms of debate in the
media.
GLAAD has devoted an
entire resource page dedicated to delivering talking points for the 2016
election as a resource for allies in the press. Beyond efforts to frame their
liberal position on marriage and so-called ‘Bathroom Bills’, GLAAD is giving
reporters suggestions on practices to undermine voter ID laws.
