The
Georgia legislature wants to begin charging sales tax on internet sales. They estimate that Georgia spends $5.1
billion a year on internet sales. The 4% sales tax would generate $200 million
more in tax revenue the State to waste. County sales taxes at 4% to 6% would
generate another $200 million to $300 million for counties and cities to get
their cut.
Georgia
taxpayers have been able to buy on-line and some of the shipping cost was
off-set by not having a sales tax. Many shoppers find it more convenient to buy
on-line. Adding this tax would make whatever we buy on-line 8% to 10% more.
The AJC
2/16/17 reports that the new tax would bring in $274 million more to the State
and $200 million for municipalities and a total of $621 million by 2020.
If you
think our State and local governments won’t waste all of this, you haven’t been
paying much attention.

Leahy, Dunwoody GA Tea Party Leader
