We are hearing the elites talking about AI, Artificial
Intelligence and they hallucinate its improbable consequences. This is just
like the bull we heard about the “Information Economy” in the 1990s.
This is just software we are able to do, but the elites
appear to be unable to articulate projects that would be economically
successful. We in the real world will believe that there is a future for AI,
when software developers succeed in protecting large data from hackers and keep
passenger trains from crashing. Computer software can be written to allow
computers to process tasks on their own. Most of us have computer initiated
virus protection, so we understand that this AI application needs to continue
to be developed for cyber security.
There are AI applications being hyped that are vague, impractical,
problematic, and won’t enjoy wide-spread consumer acceptance like driverless
cars. We really need lower-priced cars with good mileage that last over 300,000
miles, but with fewer unnecessary gadgets that drive up the initial and
maintenance costs.
It is true that automation applied to manufacturing has
solved the quality problem, but automation will not replace all jobs. High volume, high speed manufacturing plants
are already operating for production of baby diapers, light bulbs, toilet paper
and most other high volume consumer goods.
Lower volume manufacturing will continue to rely on labor,
because automation costs are too high.
Automobiles now last over 300 thousand miles due to advances in
automated design, hybrid capabilities, clear-coat paint, rust-proof materials
and power efficiency.
The high priorities for AI are to harden our vulnerable
power grid from solar damage and the microwave pulse weapon and to prevent
hacking of our financial records and eradicate identity theft.
