When Healthcare was Affordable

Healthcare before Obamacare was affordable. I pulled the annual Major Medical Insurance premiums I paid from 2003 to 2008 and our health insurance costs for 6 years totaled $37,653 and averaged $6276 per year. Our maximum annual out-of-pocket amount was $5000 and our lifetime maximum was $1 million. This was a private policy with the premium based on risk.  It covered rescue and repair charges for “medically necessary” procedures from doctors and hospitals. We had no claims.  This was pure catastrophic health insurance. We were part of the 50% “healthy”, who didn’t have any medical expenses except an annual physical.

Major Medical Insurance Costs 2003-2008 for husband and wife age 59 to 65.
2003 $5679
2004 $7225
2005 $4729
2006 $5677
2007 $7840
2008 $6503

When we were 66, we went on Medicare A & B and our costs averaged $2400 per year for both of us.
