French Problems

France is increasing their gasoline tax by 12 cents per gallon and raising their diesel fuel tax by 24 cents per gallon. This prompted protests from drivers that brought 280,000 protestors into the streets of France in 2000 separate protests.

Gasoline prices in selected countries worldwide as of April 16, 2018 (in U.S. dollars per gallon)
Gasoline price in U.S. dollars per gallon
Norway $7.82
Netherlands $7.46
Italy $7.27
France $6.97
Sweden $6.89
UK $6.57
Germany $6.43

In 2005 Gasoline prices in US dollars per gallon were:
Norway $6.27
Netherlands $6.48
Italy $5.96
France $5.54
Sweden $ 5.80
UK $5.79
Germany $5.57

60% of the cost of gasoline in France is for gas tax. The fuel cost per gallon is 40% of the total cost. In France, gasoline costs $6.97 per gallon. $4.18 is the tax on the fuel and $2.79 is the cost of the fuel. Much of the French economy depends on their ability to transport goods and services. The farmers and merchants have spoken. European politicians need to stop taxing their private sector producers out of business.
