There are a number of things teens can learn from entering the working world, including better money management, by CheckWorks.
Benefits of Encouraging Your Teen to Work - More and more families are realizing the vast benefits of encouraging their teens to look for a job. Many parents think the biggest benefit of this is the fact that their kids will gain some financial independence.
However, working teaches teens valuable skills and lessons that they will carry into college and adulthood. Among these lessons are:
#1) Time Management - Having to punch a clock is not unlike making it to school before the tardy bell rings. However, the repercussions of being late to work are greater. Working teaches teens the importance of showing up on time, and how to balance work with school, therefore managing their free time better (and realizing how invaluable it can be).
#2) Money Management - When teens are living off of an allowance, they don't give much thought to saving - or to how much they're spending. Having your own money comes with a different mindset. When teens know that their income is earned, they'll better learn how to responsibly allocate it - meaning better budgeting and saving.
#3) Importance of Experience - No amount of knowledge and good grades can compare to the power of work experience. Teens who work start building out their resume at an earlier age, giving them an advantage over others once they begin seeking out careers after college.
