Atlanta Metro Population 2019

There are 2 quoted Atlanta Metro population figures. The population of the immediate 10 county Atlanta Metro area is 4.628,400.  The population of the larger 29 county Atlanta Metro is 5,949,951.  The population of the State of Georgia is 10,627,767.  Over half of Georgia’s population is in the 29 county Atlanta Metro area.

The Nominal GDP of Georgia in 2018 was $602 billion. That’s larger than all but the largest 21 sovereign countries.

The AJC article on 8/29/19 claims the 4.6M population in the 10 county area is due to growth.

I moved to Dunwoody in DeKalb County in 1983 when the population of the 10 county Atlanta Metro was 3 million.  I saw the growth to 4 million with the surge in electronics in the 1980s. I also saw the off-shoring of electronics beginning in the 2000s and the surge of illegal welfare migrants and refugees. I saw the closing and off-shoring of manufacturing in rural Georgia cities. I saw Georgia’s failure to expand its highway system to mitigate the gridlock and the disappearance of teen employment as welfare migrants took all the minimum wage jobs.

The 10 county Atlanta Metro has a land mass of 2,865.39 square miles. The State of Georgia has a land mass of 59,425 square miles. That is larger than half the sovereign countries on the planet.
