Before
government became invasively involved in education, students had the primary
responsibility for their own education.
Parents
were responsible for teaching their children how to walk, talk, dress
themselves, read, write, do math, do chores and take on the responsibility for
learning necessary skills.
One-room
schoolhouses supported this plan and older students tutored younger students.
This encouraged individual student responsibility.
Homeschooling
comes closest to this model and is further advanced by internet access to
information and interaction within homeschool communities. The homeschool
curriculum stresses basic skills, takes half the time of regular schools and is
allowed to focus on individual student interests and talents. Homeschool
students outperform public school students on standardized tests and function
at the top of their age group.
