Humans
settled around fresh water supplies like rivers, lakes and streams and carried
water in buckets. Water wells were found and dated at 6500 BC. Brick water supply aqueducts were dated at
2350 BC. Waste water was used for irrigation in 3200 BC
Irrigation
began around 6000 BC, diverting fresh water from rivers to fields to provide
needed moisture to crops.
Clean
water is required to avoid illness from infectious diseases and harmful
microorganisms.. Water treatment includes collection, screening, chemical
addition, coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, storage and
redistribution.
The main sources of water pollution
are: Discharge of untreated Raw Sewage, Chemicals and Littering.
Earth’s
annual rainfall is 39 inches and more fresh water needs to be captured and
diverted to canals emptying into reservoirs to preserve water for human
consumption, irrigation of crops, recreation, hydroelectric plants and
development of private property. It should also be designed to mitigate
flooding and diverted to underground aquafers to be pumped out as needed.
We are
long past the need to ship goods by barges that required maintaining our rivers
to carry goods. These goods can be moved
by rail, pipeline and truck throughout the continent. Our need for fresh water
reserves is valid priority.
