Henry
Ford 1863-1947, grew up on the family farm near Detroit Michigan, with a
fascination for mechanical devices. He attended school in a one-room
schoolhouse, graduated 8th grade in 1879 and at the age of 16 and
took a machining job with Westinghouse Engine Company. He set up his own
machine shop and built a steam-powered tractor.
He became
interested in the internal combustion engine. In 1893, he was hired as Chief
Engineer with Detroit Edison Company and built his first internal combustion
engine.
In 1896
he built his first internal combustion engine automobile using a carriage
chassis and bicycle wheels. In 1902, He build a racing car and won races.
In 1903,
he opened Ford Motor Company with the Model A.
In 1908,
he introduced the Model T built on his assembly line. Ford sold 16,750,000,000
Model Ts from 1908 to 1927.
Farmers
bought them as trucks to get produce to market and families bought them to
replace the horse and buggy. In 1914, he doubled his assemblers’ wages to $5
per day. He had reduced the price of the
Model T from $900 to under $500.
