US Expansion


The American Indian War 1622-1924 was a war of gradual expansion to allow colonization and peaceful settlement by European colonists. American Indians rejected the concept of land ownership and European colonists insisted on it.

The French Indian War 1754-1763. The British took control of land East of the Mississippi. This gave the 13 British colonies control over the land to expand into territories.

The American Revolutionary War 1775-1783. British colonies gained independence from British Rule.

The United States of America 1789-Present. American Colonies established a Constitutional Republic to be administered by a representative government.

Louisiana Purchase 1804. The US expanded its territory by 800,000 square miles adding land West of the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean.

The War of 1812-1815. The US repelled British attempts to reinvade the US.

Railroads were built from 1830 to 1860 to connect Market Cities in Eastern States to move goods and passengers. The Transcontinental Railroad was built from 1863 to 1869 to connected Council Bluffs Iowa to Oakland California.

Texas Independence 1935-1836. Texas gained independence from Mexico and functioned as a separate country from 1836 to 1845.

Texas Statehood 1845. Texas was annexed by the US

Mexican American War 1846-1848. Mexico surrendered what would become California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Colorado. Treaty of Guadalupe called for the United States to pay $15 million to Mexico and to pay off the claims of American citizens against Mexico up to $5 million.

US Civil War 1861-1865. The States of Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia seceded from the US to form the Confederate States of America.

The US was reestablished in 1865 with borders from Mexico to Canada and from the Atlantic to Pacific Oceans with 3.8 million square miles and a population of 31,443,321 citizens.

Alaska was a Russian colony from 1744 until the USA bought it in 1867 for $7,200,000. It was made a state in 1959. 

Hawaii was a kingdom until 1893 and became a republic in 1894. It then ceded itself to the USA in 1898 and became a state in 1959.

The US functioned as a Capitalist Meritocracy from the 1620s to 1913. The Land Area grew from 864,776 square miles in 1790 to 2.9 million square miles in 1850.
