US Homeownership Rate 9-1-25

As of 2025, the most recently available data indicates a U.S. homeownership rate of approximately 65.0% to 65.2%, which translates to roughly 83.7 to 83.9 million U.S. citizens owning their homes out of an estimated total of 129.5 million households. However, the precise number of single-family home owners cannot be determined without additional data on the total number of single-family homes and the percentage of these homes that are owner-occupied.

Key Statistics

Overall Homeownership Rate: In 2025, the homeownership rate was 65.0% (in Q2 2025) or 65.2% (at the start of 2025), according to the Census.gov and Wikipedia respectively.

Total Households: In 2023, there were approximately 133 million occupied housing units in the U.S.

Single-Family Homes: As of 2023, single-family houses made up the majority of these units, with around 85 million out of the 133 million occupied units.

How to Determine Single-Family Homeownership

Number of Households in 2025: This data isn't readily available yet but would be necessary to get the exact number of owners.

Number of Single-Family Homes in 2025: This information also is not yet available but would be needed to determine the total number of single-family housing units.

Once you have the total number of single-family homes, multiply that number by the homeownership rate (around 65.0%) to find the approximate number of owners.

Important Note: The provided figures are based on the latest available data (mostly from 2023 or early 2025), and actual 2025 figures will only become available as data is released later in the year.

There is no official count of exactly how many US citizens own single-family homes in 2025. However, the number can be estimated based on the latest available government data on homeownership and housing type

Here is an estimation for 2025 based on recent figures:

·       Total number of homeowners: Based on a total of 131 million occupied housing units in 2023, and a 2025 owner-occupied rate of about 58% of the total units, there are an estimated 76 million homeowners in the U.S..

·       Share of single-family homes: As of 2023, single-family detached houses made up 54% of all owner-occupied homes.

Based on these figures, a rough estimate of single-family homeowners is 41 million (54%x76 million)

Factors complicating this estimate

·       Citizenship: The U.S. Census Bureau tracks homeownership by household, but does not differentiate between citizens and non-citizens when reporting aggregate statistics. Foreign ownership is a very small fraction of the total housing market.

·       Data lag: Complete, final data for 2025 on household counts and housing types will not be available until later from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey.

·       Investors: A growing share of single-family homes are being purchased by investors, though many of these are small-scale investors rather than large corporations. Some investor purchases are not owner-occupied, further separating this market segment from owner-occupied figures.
