After the New
York Times broke a story of Al Sharpton’s financial problems, which include
huge state and federal tax liabilities, unpaid rent and other bills, Sharpton
fired back. At a news conference in Harlem,
Sharpton tried to argue the figures cited were inaccurate. “We’re talking about
old taxes,” he said. “We’re not talking about anything new. So all of this, as
if I’m not paying taxes while I’m doing whatever I’m doing, it reads all right,
but it just is not true.”
Although
Sharpton claims to have paid off some of the debt, state and federal tax
records indicate the liens remain active. Sharpton says he no longer owes the
full $3.6 million dollars shown in the records, but the Times was unable
to verify that assertion because of federal privacy protections for taxpayers.
