Deterrence

Bar owners always had a shotgun behind the bar and bar patrons knew it. The existence of the shotgun and the fact that the bar owner could use it to remove threats to himself and his property were commonly known.  This prevented a lot of bar incidents. Other business owners also had guns on their property and citizens knew to behave.

In the “Wild West”, where everyone toted guns, saloon goers were dissuaded from drawing their guns, because there was always someone in the saloon who could draw their gun quicker and shoot it straighter. This deterrence kept this bunch of drunks from killing each other.

Now we have “crazies” doing mass shootings that can only be stopped by direct intervention.  Police do respond to these shootings, but they are not quick enough to prevent the damage. The answer is to secure facilities and arm several employees in the facility and be able to deploy these armed employees to stop the “crazy” before anyone is harmed. It would only take one or two incidents where facilities succeeded in using this strategy before “crazies” would be deterred.

When the riot broke out in Ferguson Mo. one white business owner was surprised to see his black friends with rifles standing in front of his facility.  The message they sent to would-be looters and rioters was clear. They stayed away from this business.  That’s deterrence.

We are beginning to understand that individual citizens are the key to deterring crime. The police only investigate crimes after they have been committed and the damage is done. We should also understand that all laws that coddle criminals should be repealed.
