The
school shooting in Florida reported on 2/16/18 has the cable news gang
pontificating about gun control vs mental illness. In Florida, they have
announced that they will demolish the school building. None of this makes much sense.
This
appears to be a shooting by a dangerously maladjusted 19 year old who was
allowed to be weird and have an assault rifle. He should have never been
allowed to keep an assault rifle or be weird.
‘Kids are
like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get’. Raising
kids can be tricky and it requires parents to determine whether or not one of
their kids is dangerously maladjusted.
When we
moved to Dunwoody in 1983, several of my kids said a “weird” kid lived one
block over from our house. Soon after that, I heard that family had moved.
Later I found out that the Dad put the weird kid in a mental treatment
facility. I also found out that the dad and mom got a divorce. That Dad did the
right thing and it came at a high cost.
Parents need to know that they may have to make hard decisions
Bad
criminal behavior should not be included in the definition of mental illness,
unless it resides in the “criminally insane” category and these folks need to
be locked up forever.
The
classical definitions of mental illness included psychosis exhibited by
hallucinations and diagnoses like schizophrenia.
Neurosis
and this is usually associated with lots of compulsive behaviors.
We now
have more young people who do not appear to be well-adjusted for lots of
reasons.
Spending
a boat-load of tax money on mental illness doesn’t sound like it hits the mark.
The school shooter and mass shooter problems stem from an unsecure facility
problem.
We need
to be looking at mitigating “cult indoctrination”, because it relates to our
terrorist and college snowflake problems. It should also include inoculations
to kill political correctness.
We need
to beware of the expansion of the nanny state to mitigate the school shooter
problem. There should be some consequences to land on the parents of these
shooters, but no consequences for all other parents.
