In 1841,
Emerson published “Self-Reliance”. His world view was similar to the Founders.
Self-Reliance was one of the concepts that made sense to me when I was a
student. We are required to be self-supporting as adults and need to develop the
skills required to do so. We are also
happier when we are self-supporting. We feel competent and responsible. We are
responsible for supporting our family.
This
responsibility is driven by a covenant and is executed by proximity. The family
consisting of a mother, father and children is the basic proximal unit and has
been since pre-history. The family needs food and shelter and the resources to
sustain themselves. The children need to be taken care of in their early years
and helped to develop the skills they will need to become self-supporting
adults. The mother and father rely on each other often throughout their entire
lives.
