The US was founded on Judeo-Christian Law and
Western Civilization history. Colonists and future immigrants were European
Christians.
The Founding Fathers of the US based our
founding documents on principles suggested by a short list of philosophers.
Marcus Tullius Cicero (106–43 B.C.) introduced Natural Law based on Human
Nature.
The Magna Carta of
1215 established rules for English Kings to ensure citizens’ rights.
Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) recommended
that everyone give up their right to kill or steal.
James Harrington (1611-1677) suggested a
House, a Senate and a combination of an Executive and the Courts.
John Locke (29 August 1632 - 28 October 1704) suggested
“life, liberty and property” as God-given rights.
Charles de Montesquieu (1689-1755)
suggested a separate Judiciary, stressed having an informed electorate and
warned about democracies ending in bankruptcy.
Protestant Ministers preached against
British abuse of colonists in the 1700s and prepared their congregations to
resist this abuse. They preached hard work and Biblical principles and paved
the way for the Founders.
The US Constitution of
1779 establishes the role of government to ensure citizens’ rights to property,
speech and freedom and limited government with a free market economy.
The Founders chose to
establish a Republic with elected Presidents and legislators. They rejected
Monarchy. They had 200 years from 1600 to 1800 to understand how to establish a
Meritocracy. They already had elected State governments and enough capable
leaders.
