US Manufacturing

The US was a major manufacturer prior to the 1970s and US consumers bought US-Made goods.

The number of manufacturing employees in the US in 1980 was 19 million. In 1990 it was 18 million. In 2000 it was 17 million. In 2010 it was 11.5 million.

Manufacturing jobs are returning to the US and has moved back up to 12.5 million.

The number of manufacturing employees in the US in 1940 rose from 9 million to 17 million due to war production and settled back to 12 million in 1945.  In 1960 manufacturing employment had moved up to 16 million and in 1970 rose again to 19.5 million.

Manufacturing employment from 1940 to 2018 by year is as follows:
9 million – 1939 – Great Depression
17 million – 1940 – World War II
12 million – 1945 – End of War Production
16.5 million – 1950 – Union dominance
16 million – 1960 – Offshoring begins
19.5 million – 1970 – Electronics Design Cycle
19 million – 1980 – PC Revolution
18 million – 1990 – Defense Resurgence
17 million – 2000 – Electronics offshoring
11.5 million – 2010 – Post 2008 Meltdown
12.5 million – 2018 – Trump Recovery

If we are able to restore 1 million manufacturing jobs per year it will take the next 6 years to return to 19 million by 2024.
