Prehistoric
settlements in China date back to 10,000 BC. Farming began in 8000 BC. Metallurgy
developed in 5000 BC.
The Xia Dynasty was
thought to have developed in 2070 BC with a consolidation of settlements along
the Yellow River.
The Great Wall of
China had its beginnings as a series of fortifications built in 771 BC. The
Wall was completed in 1644 AD.
The Shang Dynasty was
established in 1250 BC and
China was consolidated
by the Qin Dynasty in 221 BC.
Chinese culture was
guided by the writings of Confucius (551 BC – 479 BC). on proper governance.

In 1206, Genghis Khan unified all the
tribes in Mongolia, founded the Mongol khanate, and conquered an unprecedented
swathe of Asia. At the end of the 12th century, Mongolian rule grew steadily. With
Genghis Khan and his descendants expanding their territory, the Mongol Empire
extended all the way to Eastern Europe.
The part of the Mongolian khanate that
ruled China was known as the Yuan
Dynasty (1279–1368).
After a series of natural disasters and
rebellion movements led by the Han people, a new native dynasty was established in 1368. The founder, Zhu
Yuanzhang, replaced the waning Mongol Empire in China with the Ming Dynasty. It was the last ethnic Chinese dynasty, sandwiched between two foreign
ones. The Ming Dynasty represented a long period of stability.
By 1851, the Chinese
Empire had a population of 432 million and a land area of 5.7 million square
miles.
Like other Empires,
China warred with its neighbors including Japan and the Mongol Empire.
The Chinese Empire
ended in 1949 with the establishment of Communist China.
