Iran
stood at the center of the Persian Empire and its early history is identical.
The
land that is now Iran was occupied around 5000 BC. It was occupied by the
Assyrians from 1000 BC to 700 BC. It was
conquered by Alexander the Great in 334 BC. By 200 BC it was established as the
Parthian Empire. Muslims invaded Iran in 700 AD. The Mongols invaded in 1221
AD.
Iran
was not part of the Ottoman Empire, but warred with the Ottoman Turks, the
Russians and others.
By
1543, the Mongols were gone and Iranians established the Safavid Empire.
In
1828, Russia took the Caucasus including Dagestan, Georgia, Armenia and
Azerbaijan. Reducing Iran to its current borders with a land area of 636,372 sq mi.
In 1935, Reza Shah requested the
international community to refer to the country by its native name, Iran.
In 1951, Iran
nationalized its oil businesses. The US backed Mohammad Reza Pahlavi as Shah of
Iran in 1967.
In 1979, Iran
replaced the Shah with Muslim Cleric Ruhollah
Khomeini, who
established Iran as an Islamic Republic.
