The Islands of Japan
were populated from 30,000 BC to 10,000 BC over a land bridge that existed
before the end of the Ice Age in 11,700 BC.
Mainland Asian
migrants formed settlements and eventually united as a kingdom around 300 AD.
Japanese culture included the development of a warrior class embodied in the
Samuri Nobility.
Japan began to develop
into an Empire in 1868 with wars of expansion with neighboring countries like
Korea, China and Russia. In 1940 Japan allied with Germany, the US stopped oil
imports and the Japanese attacked the US in 1941.
This Empire ended in
1945 with the end of World War II. General Douglas MacArthur became the
Military Governor and developed the Constitution Japan adopted in 1947. That
gave them the blueprint to become a large economic trading partner.
Japan’s original Religion is embedded in the
culture. Shinto is deeply rooted in the Japanese people and traditions. "Shinto
gods" are called kami.
They are sacred spirits which take the form of things and concepts important to
life, such as wind, rain, mountains, trees, rivers and fertility. Humans become
kami after they die and are revered by their families as ancestral kami.
Japan is a chain of 3
islands in close proximity off the coast of South Korea. Fishing has been
important to Japan from its beginnings. Japan is dependent on imports of oil
and other goods and are vulnerable to suppliers.
