W Edwards Deming introduced
wisdom and focus in management. He stressed the importance of keeping joy in
the workplace. He understood the joy workers experienced when they got good
results and he believed it was management’s job to continually improve work
processes to solve quality problems and enhance results. Deming Quotes include:
“In God we trust; all others bring data.”
“If you can't describe what you are doing as a
process, you don't know what you're doing.”
“It is not enough to do your best, you must
know what to do, and then do your best.”
“Learning is not compulsory... neither is
survival.”
“it will not suffice to have customers that are
merely satisfied. Customers that are unhappy and some that are merely satisfied
switch. Profit comes from repeat customers—those that boast about the product
or service.”
“Performance of management should be measured
by potential to stay in business, to protect investment, to ensure future
dividends and jobs through improvement of product and service for the future,
not by the quarterly dividend.”
“Failure of management to plan for the future
and to foresee problems has brought about waste of manpower, of materials, and
of machine-time, all of which raise the manufacturer’s cost and price that the
purchaser must pay. The consumer is not always willing to subsidize this waste.
The inevitable result is loss of market. Loss of market begets
unemployment.”

Deming’s work in its
final form became “Lean Management” and enabled companies to improve continuing
quality, productivity, through-put and cost reduction from design through
delivery.
Current US companies
don’t seem to be using Deming’s approaches. They are continuing to lose market
share.
