The Revolutionary War in 1789 added to the National Debt. The Louisiana
Purchase in 1802 added $15,000,000 to the National Debt. The War of 1812 ended
in 1815. The Mexican War 1846 ended in 1848.
From 1850 to 1900, US federal revenue totaled $14,462,000,000
outlays totaled $15,453,000.000 Revenue came from Tariffs, Fees and land sales.
The Civil War 1860 ended in1865. The Indian Wars ended in the 1870s.
From 1901 to 1913 US federal revenue ranged from Increased from
$588,000,000 per year to $714,000,000. Revenue came from Tariffs and Fees.
Corporate Taxes were levied in 1901 at 1%. Income Taxes and Inheritance Taxes
were established in 1913.
In 1913, Congress delegated its power to “coin money” to the
Federal Reserve Bank, tasked with printing money and lending it to other banks
and maintaining the money supply. The US Treasury still managed selling
Treasury Securities to cover US government debt. The private companies who
built the US economy were doomed to become public companies because of the Inheritance
Tax. They could no longer use their profits as working capital to fund
expansion. They would be forced to borrow from the banks.
From 1914 to 1916 federal revenue ranged from $725,000,000 to
$761,000,000 Revenue came from Tariffs, Fees, Corporate Tax, Income Tax and
Inheritance Tax. World War I began in Europe in 1914.
In 1917, federal revenue rose to $1,101 000,000. The US joined
the Allies in World War I in 1917.
In 1918 federal revenue tripled to $3,645,000,000 and increased
again to $5,130,000,000 in 1919.
From 1919 to1931, federal revenue ranged from $3.7 million to
$4.0 million. In 1932 federal revenue dropped to $1,924,000 and climbed back to
3.6 million by 1935.
