Barack Obama Sr., the father of the former U.S. President, was a confirmed atheist by the time he met Barack Obama's mother. 

His religious background included the following transitions: 

He was born into a family that was part of the Luo ethnic group and included generations of Muslims. His own father (Barack Obama's grandfather) had converted to Orthodox Islam as a young man and changed his name to Hussein.

At around age six, while attending a Christian missionary school, he converted from Islam to Anglicanism and changed his name from "Baraka" to "Barack" at the encouragement of the school staff.

Later in life, he abandoned organized religion and became an atheist, believing that religion was merely a superstition. 

Former President Barack Obama has publicly stated that his father "had a father who was born a Muslim but became an atheist" and did not practice Islam.

Barack Obama's father, Barack Obama Sr., was from Kenya. 

He was born in Nyang'oma Kogelo, in the Rachuonyo District of the then-British Colony and Protectorate of Kenya. He moved to the United States on a scholarship to attend the University of Hawaii, where he met Ann Dunham, the future president's mother. After further studies at Harvard University, he returned to Kenya in 1964 and worked as a senior governmental economist.
