US Renters 11-18-25

As of the second quarter of 2025, approximately 35% of U.S. households are renters. This is based on the homeownership rate of roughly 65%.  

The homeownership rate has seen slight fluctuations throughout 2025, generally remaining in the 65% to 65.2% range. This rate has eased slightly compared to the end of 2024, when it was 65.7%. 

Current data shows:

The seasonally adjusted homeownership rate in Q2 2025 was 65.1%.

There were an estimated 46.4 million renter households in Q2 2025.

Renter households make up about 31.3% of the total housing inventory, with the remainder being owner-occupied or vacant units.

Approximately 31% to 41% of U.S. renter households live in single-family homes in 2025, according to various recent reports. This translates to about 15.7 million rental households living in single-family homes. 

41% of all U.S. renters: One source states that single-family rentals house 41% of the total renter population.

31% of all U.S. renters: Another report indicates that 31% of all rented homes are single-family properties.

15.7 million households: A recent analysis estimates there are 15.7 million single-family rentals in the U.S.

Preferred for families: Three-bedroom single-family homes are a preferred option for many families and investors.

In 2025, approximately 15% of all U.S. households rent single-family houses.
